A cancelled flight can completely disrupt your plans — missed connections, unexpected hotel stays, lost vacation days, or important meetings missed. The good news is that many passengers are protected by air passenger rights laws and may be entitled to compensation, refunds, rebooking, meals, accommodation, and other support from the airline.

Under EU Regulation EC 261/2004 and UK261, passengers may receive between €250 and €600 in compensation if their flight was cancelled under certain conditions.

What Is Flight Cancellation Compensation?

Flight cancellation compensation is financial compensation paid by airlines when a flight is cancelled and the disruption was within the airline's control.

In many cases, airlines must compensate passengers when:

  • The cancellation was announced less than 14 days before departure
  • The cancellation was caused by airline-related issues
  • The replacement flight caused significant delays to arrival time

Compensation is separate from refunds or rebooking. Even if the airline provides an alternative flight, you may still qualify for compensation.

When Are You Eligible for Compensation?

You may be eligible if:

  • Your flight departed from the EU or UK
  • Or your flight arrived in the EU/UK on an EU or UK airline
  • Your flight was cancelled less than 14 days before departure
  • The airline was responsible for the disruption
  • You checked in on time

Airline-related causes that may qualify include:

  • Staffing shortages
  • Technical problems
  • Operational issues
  • Aircraft rotation problems
  • Crew scheduling issues

When Compensation Usually Does Not Apply

Airlines are generally not required to pay compensation for “extraordinary circumstances” outside their control, including:

  • Extreme weather
  • Air traffic control restrictions
  • Airport security incidents
  • Political instability
  • Natural disasters
  • Some airport strikes

However, the airline must still offer care and assistance, including rerouting or refunds.

How Much Compensation Can You Get?

Under EC 261/2004, compensation depends on flight distance:

Flight DistanceCompensation
Up to 1,500 km€250
1,500 km – 3,500 km€400
Over 3,500 km€600

For some rerouted flights, compensation may be reduced by 50% if the replacement flight arrives close to the original arrival time.

Your Rights After a Flight Cancellation

If your flight is cancelled, airlines must usually offer you a choice between:

  • A full refund
  • Rebooking on the next available flight
  • Alternative transportation to your destination

Depending on the delay, you may also be entitled to:

  • Meals and refreshments
  • Hotel accommodation
  • Transport between airport and hotel
  • Access to communication such as phone calls or emails

These rights apply even when extraordinary circumstances prevent compensation payments.

Flight Cancellation Notice Rules

Whether you receive compensation often depends on how much notice the airline gave you.

More Than 14 Days Before Departure

Usually no compensation is owed.

7–14 Days Before Departure

You may still qualify unless the airline offered a replacement flight that:

  • Departed no more than 2 hours earlier
  • Arrived less than 4 hours later

Less Than 7 Days Before Departure

You may still qualify unless the replacement flight:

  • Departed no more than 1 hour earlier
  • Arrived less than 2 hours later

What Flights Are Covered?

EC 261 and UK261 generally cover:

EU Flights

  • Flights departing from EU airports
  • Flights arriving in the EU operated by EU airlines

UK Flights

  • Flights departing from the UK
  • Flights arriving in the UK on UK or EU airlines

How to Claim Flight Cancellation Compensation

Claiming compensation usually involves these steps:

  1. Gather your documents — Keep boarding passes, booking confirmations, receipts, and airline communications.
  2. Confirm eligibility — Check the cancellation notice period, arrival delay, and reason for cancellation.
  3. Submit a claim to the airline — Most airlines have online compensation forms.
  4. Escalate if necessary — If the airline rejects your claim unfairly, you may escalate to a national enforcement body or use a claims specialist.

Can You Claim for Connecting Flights?

Yes — if your connecting flights were booked under a single reservation.

If one cancelled flight caused you to miss your final destination and arrive significantly later, compensation may be calculated based on the total journey distance and final arrival delay.

Can You Get Both a Refund and Compensation?

Usually, compensation and refunds are separate rights. You may receive:

  • Compensation for inconvenience
  • Plus a refund if you choose not to travel

However, if you accept a replacement flight and complete your journey, you generally would not receive a refund for the ticket itself.

What About Package Holidays?

If your cancelled flight was part of a package holiday, additional protections may apply depending on your country and booking type.

Package travel organisers may be responsible for arranging alternatives, accommodation, or refunds alongside airline obligations.
